Soil Nailing
Steel bars drilled and grouted into a cut face, turning the ground itself into the retaining structure. Built top-down as the dig goes, so the excavation supports itself without a separate wall.
About Soil Nailing
A nailed wall is constructed in lifts: excavate a metre or two, drill and grout the nails, apply the facing, then dig the next lift. Because support arrives before the next cut is made, the face is never left unsupported, and there is no propping in the middle of the site for the following trades to work around.
The facing is usually sprayed concrete over mesh, finished flat or left textured, and the nails are proof-tested to verify the bond the design assumed. It is the fastest and cheapest way to hold a temporary excavation in ground with any cohesion, and with the right corrosion protection the same wall serves permanently.
